That's where the miter slots come in to play! They are invaluable when it comes to making jigs. I have a few jigs for my table saw and most of them reference off the miter slots, with exception to some that reference off the fence. One of the most useful jigs for the table saw is the crosscut sled.

Would it be safe (and effective) to create with a couple of pieces of wood that along the sides of the saw on the bottom of the sled itself?
Would it be idiotic to try and make a crosscut sled without using any miter slots? Why couldn't the runners "hug" the main body of the saw on each side of the table? Has anyone done this before, or is it a useless effort?-Pak
